On occasion, Applied Arts Magazine engages an external agency to guest art direct an issue. During my time at Frank Design Strategy, we were honoured with this task.
We wanted the design of the annual to showcase the work of the artists first and foremost, not create an overly designed magazine to impress our peers. Instead we allowed the content to inform the design.
The theme of the issue and also one of the features was the “Unsung Heroes of Design”. Those in the industry who do not always get acknowledged. The printer, production artist, programmer, font designer (to name a few).
